There were a Desperate Housewife, an Olympic speedskater and two New York Jets, but apparently no gatecrashers Wednesday night at President Obama’s second state dinner — though a limo bearing Tareq and Michaele Salahi, the infamous gate-crashers from last year’s state dinner, was ticketed for running a red light not far from the White House.
That was as close as the evening came to unanticipated drama. At the event — held to mark the visit of Mexican President Felipe Calderon and his wife, Margarita Zavala — the White House doubled down on security, checking guests’ names and invitations not just once or twice, but at least three times on their way into the party. Administration officials didn’t want a repeat of the drama from November’s state dinner, when three people, including the Salahis, apparently sneaked into the White House sans invite.
The only moment that wasn’t closely monitored and choreographed by event planners occurred just before the dinner proper, when the White House protocol chief Capricia Penavic Marshall fell on the steps outside as the president and the first lady were being photographed on the red carpet.
